“Bad Cats of Biddeford” Children’s Book Debuts
First Book Signing Scheduled for July 17th

PORTSMOUTH, NH--Local author Crystal Ward Kent of Eliot, ME and Portsmouth, NH-based illustrator Denise F. Brown have a second children’s book to their credit, “The Bad Cats of Biddeford.” Their first book signing is scheduled for Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Beach-Funatic in York Beach, Maine. They will also be signing copies of their first book, the popular “Tugboat River Rescue,” the true story of a tugboat rescue on the Piscataqua.

Set in Biddeford, Maine, “The Bad Cats of Biddeford,” tells the tale of a band of stray cats who become robbers in an effort to better their lives. They steal toys and food thinking these items will make them happy and in doing so, wreak havoc on the seaside town. But are the Bad Cats really bad? Can someone help them find the homes they dream about?

Compelling illustrations and humorous prose combine for a good read that also highlights the plight of homeless animals. The back of the book includes a section on how to help local shelters and animals in need. “The story is loosely based on a real incident,” say Kent. “Back in the 1990s, WCSH Channel 6 had a features reporter named Bob Elliott who did a tongue-in-cheek story on a large number of stray cats who were causing problems in Biddeford. He referred to them as the ‘Bad Cats of Biddeford’ and I thought this was both a great name and idea for a story.”

Both Kent and Brown are long-time animal lovers, and Kent is a former director of the NHSPCA and shelter volunteer. “We hope families will enjoy the story and also be encouraged to help their local shelters. Maybe they can give a deserving pet a forever home,” she says.

“The Bad Cats of Biddeford” retails for $14.99 and is available on Amazon.com, and at regional retailers. Watch for future book signings throughout the local area.

Kent writes for numerous local and regional magazines, Guidepost books and Chicken Soup books, and is the author of “Mainely Kids: A Guide to Family Fun in Southern Maine” and “Harvest Maine” by The History Press. She is also the owner of Kent Creative, a writing, marketing and design studio.

Brown is the owner of Ad-Cetera Graphics and RaccoonStudios.com with her husband, John O’Sullivan, and is also a well-known artist. She is the author of the popular “Ted Gets Out” children’s coloring books as well as “Abenaki the Indian Pony” and “A Deer Visits Nubble Lighthouse.”
